When high pressures are exerted on two moving metal surfaces, e.g., in gear boxes, the asperities touch each other generating high temperatures. With poorly formulated lubricants, such contacts can lead to welding of asperities thereby ruining system performance. Correctly formulated lubricants containing extreme pressure/antiwear additives (EP/AW additives), avoid such damage since these additives prevent welding even if asperities come briefly into contact. 


The IRGALUBE® line of antiwear additives is especially developed for formulating antiwear compressor and hydraulic fluids, gear oils and greases. IRGALUBE® provides long term lubricant stability together with excellent antiwear and corrosion prevention while protecting industrial and mobile equipment operating at high pressure and temperature. IRGALUBE® products are hydrolytically stable and provide excellent compatibility with system contaminants such as water, calcium and zinc.

Corrosion occurs when water enters the lubricant system: this can be counteracted by the use of corrosion inhibitors. In addition, like the metal deactivators, they deactivate the metal surface thus ensuring that lubricant degradation processes are not catalyzed.  


IRGACOR® corrosion inhibitors protect ferrous metals against rust and oxidation. In some cases, multi-metal protection is possible. Oil soluble and water soluble products are available, with low foaming tendency and excellent air release. Use of ashless corrosion inhibitors can also reduce heavy metal contamination of the environment. Many of the products are FDA regulated for use in incidental food-contact applications.

Metal deactivators have two main functions: First, they must suppress any chemical attack on the surface of copper and copper alloys which is sometimes called corrosion. Blackening of the copper as shown above occurs most often where sulfur containing lubricants are exposed to high temperatures. Metal deactivators also passivate the metal surface to avoid residues that act as catalysts for radical formation.
 

IRGAMET® metal deactivators are yellow metal passivators. High synergism with IRGANOX® antioxidants gives superior oxidative stability of the fluid. Oil soluble and water soluble products are available, and several are FDA regulated for use in incidental food-contact applications.

Turbines run for 20-40 years without fully changing the lubricants.
